Student Opportunities
Hanes Art Gallery and stArt Gallery offer students two ways to gain hands-on experience in gallery operations and arts administration: internships and Federal Work-Study positions. Both opportunities provide meaningful professional experience while contributing to exhibitions, public programs, visitor engagement, and the daily operations of the galleries.
Internships
Internship Applications are currently closed and will reopen later this fall.
Hanes Art Gallery and stArt Gallery internships provide students with hands-on experience in academic gallery operations, exhibitions, public programming, communications, and community engagement. Interns work closely with professional staff while developing practical skills in collaboration, project management, communication, and arts administration.
Students may apply for one or more of the following internship tracks:
Gallery Programming & Operations
Support exhibition installation, event planning, gallery operations, and behind-the-scenes logistics while gaining broad experience in arts administration and cultural programming.
Education & Engagement
Develop educational resources, lead gallery tours, assist with community partnerships, and help create engaging public programs that connect audiences with art.
Marketing & Communications
Create social media content, promotional materials, newsletters, photography, and marketing campaigns that expand the gallery’s visibility and audience.
Curatorial & Exhibitions
Work alongside the Acquavella Director of University Galleries & Collections on curatorial research, exhibition planning, interpretive materials, and installation. (Art History majors/minors preferred.)
All Interns participate in weekly meetings with gallery staff and complete a combination of scheduled gallery hours and independent project work throughout the semester.

Federal Work-Study Positions
Hanes Art Gallery and stArt Gallery hire both Undergraduate Gallery Assistants and Graduate Gallery Assistants each academic year.
These positions support the daily operations of the galleries through visitor engagement, exhibition and event support, gallery monitoring, and administrative assistance. Graduate Gallery Assistants also serve in a leadership role by supporting gallery operations and mentoring undergraduate assistants.
Both positions provide valuable experience in gallery and museum operations, arts administration, public programming, community engagement, and professional communication.
Undergraduate Gallery Assistant
Pay: $10.00/hour
Hours: 4–6 hours per week (additional shifts available, up to 15 hours/week)
Eligibility: Federal Work-Study required
Gallery Assistants welcome visitors, monitor exhibitions, assist with events, support exhibition installation and deinstallation, help maintain gallery spaces, and contribute to the day-to-day operation of the gallery while gaining foundational experience in museum and gallery work.
Graduate Gallery Assistant
Pay: $12.00/hour
Hours: 5–10 hours per week (additional shifts available, up to 20 hours/week)
Eligibility: Open to Wake Forest graduate students with Federal Work-Study eligibility
Graduate Gallery Assistants build on the Gallery Assistant role by providing operational leadership, assisting with event coordination and exhibition support, mentoring undergraduate assistants, and helping manage daily gallery workflows.
