The Darkness Opening Reception

October 16th, 2025 from 5-8pm in Hanes Art Gallery; Performance by Rudy Shepherd at 6pm.

Please join us for the Opening Reception of The Darkness and Grand Reopening Celebration for Hanes Art Gallery on October 16, from 5-8 pm. The evening will feature a special live performance by artist Rudy Shepherd titled The Induction Ceremony, at 6pm.

In this performance, Shepherd inhabits a character he calls The Healer, activating his large-scale sculptures, the Black Rock Negative Energy Absorbers, with live, improvised music. Performed with musicians Elia Einhorn (keyboard), Marcus Braithewaite (keyboard and drums), and Mark Dixon (bass), along with Shepherd himself on theremin, synthesizers, and other sound-making devices, the work creates a transformative environment of sound, sculpture, and movement.

The Induction Ceremony invites the audience to participate in a collective release of fear, negativity, and uncertainty; an act of symbolic healing that reflects the exhibition’s themes of resilience, renewal, and the power of belief.

The reception will celebrate both the opening of the exhibition and the grand reopening of Hanes Art Gallery following its summer renovations!
