Starting February 27th, the Hanes Gallery welcomes Carl Hazlewood to create a large-scale in-situ work in the Main Gallery, along with a selection of his completed works. His residency-exhibition will culminate with a gallery discussion and finissage on Friday, March 17. Throughout his stay he will be available to students and faculty with his work on view until March 29.
CARL E. HAZLEWOOD was born in 1951 in Guyana, South America. He received a BFA with honors, from Pratt Institute, and an MA from Hunter College, CUNY. Parallel to his studio practice, Hazelwood co-founded Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ in 1983. Hazlewood is currently finishing a project at Dia Chelsea and is on the cusp of his second MacDowell fellowship. He recently completed a two-year residency at Art Cake in Brooklyn. He has been a Yaddo Fellow, and a resident of the Brown Foundation Fellow-Dora Maar House, France, and the Bogliasco Foundation, Italy, among others. Hazlewood is represented by Welancora Gallery in Brooklyn.
While Hazlewood engages with the language of abstraction, his work is infused with his experience of the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora. Born in Guyana, Hazlewood observes that,
Like the rest of the Caribbean, it remains an ambivalent site of both desire and desperation. Movement for a lot of us — people like me — from one place to another, from one social/political situation to another, is an inescapable part of our existence; from the enforced travel of the Middle Passage, and now in North America where one dreamed of escaping the vicissitudes of Colonialism and poverty. So, while the things I’m producing may seem a bit off-kilter, perhaps referential to a belated modernism, in reality it’s more intimate than that. The visual arts, poetry, literature, allow us to dream in metaphor, allow us to fashion something positive from our conflicted history. The vicissitudes of shared tragedy, disappointment, beauty, loss, and love can bind us even tighter to each other. It’s all about community, and genuine community is ultimately about love.
