Finster’s 1983 live appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Selected new video by Victor Faccinto.

Howard Finster pastored churches and preached revivals for over 40 years. Following his now famous “vision of the man at the gate” in 1976, he began creating art on a full time basis. Finster was a self-taught artist who brought to this undertaking a lifetime of experiences and skills, including carpentry, woodworking, bicycle and TV repair, masonry - more than 20 occupations by his count. Coupled with an inventive spirit, endless energy, and a profound mission to preach through his art, these skills-of-the-hand served him well during his creation of over 46000 pieces, up to the time of his death in 2001.

Victor Faccinto, an artist and director of WFU’s Hanes Art Gallery, met Howard Finster shortly after arriving at Wake Forest in 1978. Over the next 5 years he photographed and filmed Finster’s Paradise Garden and recorded his stories, sermons and music. Some of Faccinto’s and Finster’s artwork share subject matter and visual territory. This mixed installation of their works is intended to allow the viewer an opportunity to discover these similarities for themselves.
